“Latin and Greek for Scientists introduced me to the hidden meanings behind everyday words, and I found it fascinating to track the roots of the English language back to the ancient world. I learnt how to parse words, which consists of identifying their individual parts, translating them, and inferring the meaning of the word as a whole. The online aspect of the course is flexible and easy to work around your personal commitments. It is the perfect summer elective for science and medicine students and has the added bonus of freeing up a spot in the following semester’s course load. I would recommend this course to anyone interested in the history and development of language, and the open-ended topics allow for creative freedom and field specialisation.”

— Ella Cook, CLAS2038OL Latin and Greek for Scientists

“For the first semester of 2023 I undertook as one of my elective courses, Greco-Roman Mythology II. This course was firstly picked as I had a passion growing up for Greek Mythology and even just from reading about the course online and knew that I would enjoy it. Upon starting the course it too what I had knew about the myths and greatly improved on them, not just in the general stories, but more importantly in how to analyse, reflect and find greater meaning within them which can easily be applied to everyday life. The biggest take away from doing this course, apart from the wealth of knowledge handed down not only from my teachers and fellow students (whom really helped me come to terms on how to succeed in this course) was how to analyse texts and do essay writing at a much higher level than I had previously achieved in my university studies, which in my future courses will drastically increase my overall work towards the ending of my current degree. I would highly recommend this class to anyone, not just people who have an interest in Greco-Roman mythology, but to anyone that studies/works in the creative arts fields (like myself who is a musician) because not only does participating in this class benefit overall university work and essay writing, but for anyone in the creative fields, this class is a constant source of artistic inspiration which can be used to draw upon for further creation of music and art.”

– Aiden Cibich, CLAS2032 Greco-Roman Mythology II

“The thing I loved most about Greco-Roman Mythology was discussing and analysing the myths that remain so pervasive within Western Civilization. Interacting with the primary sources allowed me to understand the wide variety of versions of the different myths, and I gained a deeper understanding of the way myths changed and adapted based on location and time. The focus on Roman writers and their approaches to the mythology of their predecessors was particularly interesting, and I gained an appreciation for the methods utilised by Vergil, Lucian, and Ovid to explore and transform the established stories. You should take this course to obtain an in depth look at various myths and to understand the importance of these myths in understanding the lives and fears of the Greeks and Romans. While it is challenging, the knowledge you will gain is very interesting and your skills of analysis and research will also grow to higher standards.”

— William Clarke, CLAS2032 Greco-Roman Mythology II

“As someone with an interest in medicine, I found CLAS2024 Ancient Medicine and its Legacy to be fascinating. I enjoyed learning about medicine in the ancient world and its different cultural contexts, and learning about innovations in medicine that have had an impact on contemporary Western medicine. This course taught me how to analyse the important stages of scientific thought and rational medicine, and their interactions, it improved my critical evaluation and analysis of ancient primary texts, and has given me specialised knowledge and understanding of the history of science and medicine, as well as an awareness of issues related to scientific progress. I would highly recommend this course to anyone interested in not only ancient history, but also the development of the medical and scientific world.”

– Chelsea Schwartz, CLAS2024 Ancient Medicine and its Legacy
